Meet Gjivai Zechiël, Feyenoord’s up-and-coming midfield maestro

Nailing the pronunciation of Gjivai Zechiël may be a challenge for some, but it’ll be worth the effort. The Dutch G is a guttural one, not struck with a tongue so much as residing under one’s uvula like a congested H: kHEE-vye. The surname is a bit more straightforward: ZEH-kee-el, a natural decrescendo of emphasis with every syllable.

Used in a sentence: Gjivai Zechiël is one of the hottest midfielders in Europe, enjoying arguably the most rapid emergence of any high-level player in 2026.

In few other industries would a 22-year-old be viewed as something of a late bloomer, but such is the nature of soccer at present. Zechiël left boyhood club Sparta Rotterdam for crosstown rival Feyenoord’s academy at age 14, only earning a senior contract as he neared his 18th birthday – a bit later than most of their academy prospects. For reference, Shaqueel van Persie signed his first senior deal before turning 16.

Still not ready for the first team, Zechiël continued to develop with loans to fellow Eredivisie sides Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht. The latter stint was especially useful, giving him 50 appearances in all competitions to adjust to life as a first-choice starter.

It’s status he’s relished in since returning to Feyenoord. Zechiël opened his Champions League account in audacious style on Wednesday, giving the hosts an early equalizer.

Curiously for a player who’s hitting new heights with every performance, nobody seems to agree on how tall Zechiël is. Some resources list him at 5ft 7in, while others insist he’s a flat six-footer. The eye test suggests he’s on the taller half of that spectrum, as his legs make him a tricky operator in congested areas. On the ball, he applies the crucial half-touch prods in tight quarters to keep opponents from taking the ball off of his feet. In defense, his legs can gum up passing lanes in a hurry, much to Como’s frustration in the first half of their Champions League tie.

Fortunately, his performance data is more straightforward than his listed height. Zechiël has been a crucial figure in Feyenoord’s early push to the top of the Eredivisie, a starter in all eight league games as well as both Champions League fixtures. He’s logged a goal contribution in seven of his first 10 games now, including five goals and four assists in the league.

His composure makes him a confident upfield dribbler, operating in the advanced right station of Feyenoord manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s three-man midfield. His instinct is to set up shop inside the final third, where he looks to play balls into the box or get into areas for late-arrival shots.

In the early Eredivisie season, per FotMob, Zechiël averages 2.54 chances created per 90 (92nd percentile league-wide for his position) while generating 0.33 expected assists per 90 (94th percentile). He helps Feyenoord congest the opponent’s area, making 5.3 box touches per 90, and puts over half of his attempts on-frame (2.7 shots per 90, 1.5 shots on target per 90).

Zechiël is already a vital figure for a title contender, and Feyenoord wisely extended his contract in mid-September, securing his future through June 2029. “I feel right at home here and know that I can still make a lot of progress,” Zechiël said in the club’s announcement. “Not just for me personally, but for the team as well. We put a lot of energy into that every day. I can’t wait to see what’s still to come.”

And yet he’s already a growing presence in the transfer rumor mills, having been linked to over half of the Premier League’s big six in recent weeks. His approach has also caught Xavi’s eye, with the new Netherlands national team coach giving Zechiël his senior debut on 1 October against Greece.

Given the more open state of play in the Eredivisie, teams in Europe’s largest leagues are often doubtful that a player’s output from that league will translate to their own; for every success like Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey, there’s a disappointment like Milan’s Santi Giménez. Zechiël, though, projects well due to how much of his game relies on his instincts and physicality – traits that are applicable and appreciated in all competitions.

He glides on the ball with ease through the midfield, and regularly pops up in different areas at the edge of the box to pose a threat. He’s almost constantly in motion off the ball, drifting to close passing lanes and checking his spacing between his defense and the forwards alike. His creativity is already padding Feyenoord’s scorelines, while his instincts are swiftly translating to the Champions League level.

It’s a rare delight when a player breaks out at a later stage than more-hyped teenagers such as Lamine Yamal and Cavan Sullivan. Time will tell how Zechiël’s progression will compare.
