That’s a great result for Northern Ireland, who beat Ukraine 3-0 in Slovakia. Ciaron Brown – the only player in the starting XI over the age of 24 – scored either side of Isaac Price’s goal. We’ll have more on that in our Nations League round-up.

9.42pm BST

Full time: France 1-1 Italy France drop points for the first time under Zinedine Zidane. That was a fine match, a fascinating clash of styles that could have gone either way: Gigi Donnarumma made some stunning saves, but Italy were a big threat in transition and might have won the game after the late dismissal of Dayot Upamecano.

Both goals came in the second half. Michael Olise, who at times was magical, lashed France in front from a short free-kick. But Italy never lost heart and equalised when Alessandro Bastoni punished an error from Lucas Da Cunha.

9.39pm BST

90+3 min At the other end, Calafiori’s fierce cross flashes just behind Kean in front of goal. This is great fun.

9.38pm BST

90+2 min: France penalty appeal! Olise goes flying in the Italy area after a desperate lunging tackle from Bastoni. The referee gives nothing and VAR are happy that Bastoni got enough on the ball.

9.37pm BST

90+2 min Donnarumma makes one last save for the road, leaping to his right to paw away Camavinga’s curler from 25 yards.

Bastoni has been booked for something or other.

9.35pm BST

90 min Four minutes of added time.

9.35pm BST

90 min: Italy substitution Gianluca Scamacca on, Nicolo Fagioli off.

9.34pm BST

89 min Fagioli, 40 yards from goal, temporarily mistakes himself for Arie Haan. Goalkick to France.

9.34pm BST

88 min: Chance for Italy! Vergara’s deflected cross from the left is poked high and wide by the stretching Barella, 10 yards out. A tough chance to take first time.

9.33pm BST

87 min: France substitution The resulting free-kick almost breaks for Bastoni, whose shot on the turn deflects behind. Italy fancy this now.

Before the corner is taken, France bring on Maxence Lacroix for for Lucas Da Cunha.

9.31pm BST

85 min: Upamecano sent off France are down to ten men. Upamecano is given a second yellow card for pulling back Kean, who won a wrestling match on the left wing and would have been away. France argue that Kean and Upamecano were fouling each other, but it hasn’t been overturned and Upamecano is doing one.

Updated at 9.48pm BST

9.29pm BST

84 min A sizzling long-range hit from Camavinga is pushed away dramatically by the flying Donnarumma. A bit of a showy save, not as tough as some of his others tonight, but he still did well.

9.28pm BST

83 min Dembele shoots over from distance. His decision making has been unusually poor tonight.

9.28pm BST

82 min Vergara is booked for a foul on Truffert.

9.28pm BST

81 min: Kean hits the bar! Vergara teases an inswinging cross from the right towards the far post. Kean gets up well and loops a header that hits the top of the crossbar with Maignan backpedalling desperately. I think Maignan got a slight touch as well, though I doubt Kean’s header would have dropped in.

9.25pm BST

80 min: Double substitution for Italy Daniel Maldini and Issa Doumbia come on for Davide Frattesi and Sebastiano Esposito.

9.25pm BST

79 min Da Cunha is penalised for what looks a decent tackle on Frattesi. For the first time tonight, France are getting frustrated.

9.22pm BST

76 min: Double substitution for France A snapshot from Cherki is kneed wide by an Italian defender, but the unsighted referee gives a goalkick.

That’s Cherki’s last contribution: France bring on Eduardo Camavinga and Bradley Barcola, with Desire Doue the other player to go off.

Updated at 9.23pm BST

9.21pm BST

75 min In other news, Romelu Lukaku has made it Belgium 3-0 Turkey. I think that’s his 95th goal in international football.

9.20pm BST

73 min That penalty appeal leads to a bit of posturing and yellow cards for Upamecano and Kean. Replays suggest Upamecano motioned to headbutt Frattesi, which was a bit daft.

9.18pm BST

73 min France appeal unsuccessfully for a penalty when Doue goes down in the area after a challenge from Barella. Nothing in it.

9.17pm BST

71 min It was Trossard.

9.17pm BST

70 min: Great save by Donnarumma! Rabiot almost restores France’s lead with a fierce left-foot drive across goal. Donnarumma plunges to his right and fingertips the ball round the post. That’s an outstanding save, similar to one he made against Arsenal (possibly from Leandro Trossard) in the Champions League semi-final two years ago.

Updated at 9.18pm BST

9.15pm BST

Rabiot clipped a risky pass into Da Cunha, who was facing his own goal, 25 yards out, and couldn’t hear Bastoni charging up behind him. A heavy touch allowed Bastoni to nick the ball, gallop into the area and open his body to beat Maignan with a relaxed left-foot shot. A Horlicks from France, sure, but an outstanding piece of play from Bastoni.

GOAL! France 1-1 Italy (Bastoni 68) Alessandro Bastoni has stunned the Stade de France!

Updated at 9.26pm BST

9.13pm BST

67 min Kevin De Bruyne’s second goal has put Belgium 2-0 up against Turkey in the other game. Belgium play in France on Monday, with Italy hosting Turkey.

Updated at 9.29pm BST

9.10pm BST

64 min The lively Sebastiano Esposito controls a cross beyond the far post, turns Kalulu and drives a low cross-shot that is slightly behind Kean in the middle. The ball flies wide, either off Kean or a defender; I think there might have been an offside anyway.

Updated at 9.11pm BST

9.09pm BST

63 min: Italy substitutions Nicolo Barella and Antonio Vergara on, Sandro Tonali and Pio Esposito off.

9.08pm BST

62 min “Zinedine Zidane’s best Real Madrid side always sought to make the game more chaotic, disrupting their opponents patterns,” writes Kári Tulinius. “Destroying order so that they could create. I can’t think of many other top managers who’ve sought less control over a match. You can see some hints of that in this France, but while they have oodles of creativity, they lack destruction.”

9.07pm BST

61 min Cherki doesn’t connect properly with a slashing left-foot shot after a delightful turn on the edge of the area. He’s also been excellent tonight.

9.06pm BST

60 min Scalvini does very well to stop Olise running onto Truffert’s cutback. Right now Italy are holding on to their 1-0 deficit.

9.05pm BST

58 min I think Olise has scored nine and made 11 in his last 23 appearances for France. He’s a fantasy footballer and a Fantasy Footballer rolled into one.

9.02pm BST

GOAL! France 1-0 Italy (Olise 55) The free-kick is dragged forward a couple of yards to Olise, who whips a majestic shot over the wall and into the net. It hit the underside of the bar, bounced onto the goalline and then up into the roof of the net. Donnarumma had no chance. Another memorable goal from one of the world’s most stylish and joyful footballers.

Updated at 9.20pm BST

9.00pm BST

55 min Fagioli is booked for a cynical foul on Cherki just outside the area. It’s been all France at the start of the second half.

8.59pm BST

53 min On the subject of Zizou the manager, Ruth Purdue has sent in a link to his half-time team-talk during the 2017 Champions League final against Juventus.

8.55pm BST

50 min A trademark curler from Olise is clawed away to his right by the diving Donnarumma. That’s another very good save.

8.55pm BST

48 min: Brilliant double save from Donnarumma Doue shuffles across the edge of the area and whips a shot through the crowd that is pushed away by the diving Donnarumma. The ball runs loose in front of goal, with Dembele looking certain to score, but Donnarumma jumps to his feet and then dives full length to his left to make an outstanding follow-up save.

Updated at 9.07pm BST

8.52pm BST

47 min “Why is it Rob,” begins Peadar de Burca, “that I imagine Zizou’s teamtalk to be him sitting in the centre of the dressing room, barefooted, strumming a guitar to the tune of Van Morrison’s ‘Madame George’, before gazing at a spot on the wall and whispering, ‘Allez...’?”

You want me to answer that?

8.51pm BST

46 min Peep peep! Italy begin the second half; no changes on either side, yet.

8.35pm BST

Half time: France 0-0 Italy A fun first half in Saint-Denis. France played some bewildering football at times, but most of their goal attempts were from distance and Italy had the two clearest chances.

8.32pm BST

44 min Frattesi shoots well wide from distance after a decent Italy move. Roberto Mancini is getting a tune out of them.

8.30pm BST

41 min: Disallowed goal for Italy! The resulting corner leads to a disallowed goal from Kean, who was well offside when he swept a good finish on the turn past Maignan.

Updated at 8.31pm BST

8.29pm BST

41 min: Just wide from Frattesi! Michael Kayode’s long throw causes havoc in the France defence. The ball breaks to Frattesi, whose snapshot from 10 yards takes a subtle deflection and flies just wide. Not sure who the France defence was, or how much they knew about it, but that touch probably saved a goal.

Updated at 8.30pm BST

8.27pm BST

39 min Another Dembele shot is blocked, this time by Calafiori. France are all over Italy like a cheap cliche.

8.26pm BST

37 min He has now. Olise plays a sharp pass into Dembele, 25 yards out. He turns, eschews a pass to Cherki and blooters a right-foot shot that is pushed away with both hands by Donnarumma. A comfortable save for him.

8.25pm BST

37 min That said, for all France’s pressure, Gigi Donnarumma still hasn’t made a save.

8.24pm BST

36 min Doue cuts back inside Kayode on the left side of the area and lashes a low shot that is blocked. It feels like a France goal is in the post.

8.21pm BST

34 min In the other game in Group A1, or whatever we’re calling it, Belgium lead Turkey 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Kevin De Bruyne.

Updated at 8.36pm BST

8.20pm BST

32 min “I saw both parts of the new movie about Charles de Gaulle’s war this week, and I can recommend them highly,” writes Gary Naylor. “Niels Schneider plays a French general of whom I had never heard before, one Philippe François Marie Leclerc de Hauteclocque. Maybe he studied Zidane’s style, as he played the heroic soldier exactly Mr Antaki describes Zizou at 7.41pm.”

8.20pm BST

31 min France probe patiently on the dge of the area until Truffert’s stinging shot is blocked. Seconds later Olise gets round the back and screws a cross that his shinned wide of his own goal, I think by Scalvini. France are playing some charming football, particularly in tight areas.

8.18pm BST

30 min Calafiori wanders infield to the edge of the D and tries his luck. His shot is blocked but the ball loops towards Sebastiano Esposito, who fresh-airs a tough volley with the outside of the right foot.

8.17pm BST

29 min “It is funny to see everyone trying to parse the working of Zizou,” writes Krishnamoorthy V. “Eli Wallach’s philosophy of ‘When you got to shoot, shoot; don’t talk’ is apparently an effective doctrine. If Zizou can recreate the magic he did at Real, few will question him his methods. Honestly speaking, with THIS French squad , you do not need to do much.”

8.16pm BST

27 min Dembele, on the stretch, can’t control a clever but awkward through pass from Cherki.

At the other end Frattesi seizes upon a loose ball, 40 yards from goal, and tries to charge straight through the gap. Kalulu comes across to intercept.

8.15pm BST

25 min Olise, not for the last time, has been the most eyecatching player on the field. With his balance, disguise, sinuous dribbling and quick passing, he is a joy to watch. He could make bunion removal surgery look elegant.

Updated at 8.15pm BST

8.12pm BST

23 min: France hit the bar! Rabiot is fouled on the left wing, though the defender Scalvini disagreed with the referee’s verdict. The free-kick is taken short and moved across to Dembele, whose long-range deflects behind off Sebastiano Esposito.

France take the corner quickly on the left. It’s played short and then move into Olise, whose cross takes a big deflection, loops over Donnarumma and hits the top of the crossbar.

Updated at 8.13pm BST

8.09pm BST

20 min Olise teases Calafiori on the right, hinting that he might on the outside. It’s all a ruse: he cuts inside and whacks a long-range curling shot off target.

Updated at 8.27pm BST

8.07pm BST

19 min Olise meanders infield from the right, hugging the ball on his Harvard-educated left foot, then tries to flip a cross towards Rabiot and Doue at the far post. It’s overhit – Harvard education my derriere – and Italy have a goalkick.

8.06pm BST

17 min Mancini will be pleased with how Italy have started. They haven’t had much of the ball but Gigi Donnarumma’s gloves remain unsullied and the only big chance fell to Italy. Slightly risible cliche though it is, world football needs a strong Italy.

8.04pm BST

14 min Roberto Mancini is back as Italy manager, of course, but this time he’s without his terrible twin Gianluca Vialli. If you haven’t seen it, I’d urge you watch the documentary about Sampdoria’s fairytale scudetto in 1990-91. Spoiler: there will be some rain on your face when Mancini and Vialli discuss their friendship.

Updated at 8.06pm BST

8.01pm BST

12 min France have picked up where they left off before that chance. But they know now, if they didn’t before, that Italy can hurt them.

7.59pm BST

9 min: Great chance for Italy! Frattesi smashes a crossfield pass out to Sebastiano Esposito on the right wing. He pushes the ball infield to Kayode, whose first-time cross reaches Keane six yards out at the far post. He bobbles a left-foot shot too close to Maignan, who scrambles desperately across his goalline to keep it out.

That was the first time Italy have got through the France press, and it should have led to a goal.

7.53pm BST

5 min A loose ball across the Italy defence is stolen by Olise on the right. He escapes Calafiori but then slips and the ball runs out of play.

7.51pm BST

7.49pm BST

1 min Peep peep! France kick off from left to right as we watch.

7.48pm BST

The captains Ousmane Dembele and Gianluigi Donnarumma, teammates in Paris for three seasons, shake hands on the halfway line. Almost time for the action.

7.43pm BST

There’s a spectacular welcome for Zinedine Zidane, who is managing France at home for the first time. He’s dressed all in black, like a more inscrutable Martin Blank. As a great commentator once said, not a flicker.

Updated at 8.12pm BST

7.41pm BST

“Curious as to how he comes across in front of a microphone, I had a look and a listen to Zinedine Zidane’s press conference ahead of the game (now up in various places, eg here),” begins Charles Antaki. “What a presence the man has, even though he seems to barely speak above a shy whisper: he hardly moves his head or body, and when he looks at the questioner it’s in part menacing and indulgent - but he dominates. Now and then he’ll give a little chuckle. The commander of a particularly tough Foreign Legion outpost deciding on the fate of a raw but promising recruit. Maybe it’s this that brings out the best in the Olises and Dembélés of the squad; in any case, results suggest that it’s working.”

Beautifully put. Imagine how tall you would feel after receiving a “well done” from Zidane.

7.02pm BST

“Is Marco Materazzi in the house?” asks Peter Oh. “Given the primacy of gestures in today’s world, a symbolic handshake to bury the headbutt, I mean hatchet would be appropriate.”

Have you checked hell’s temperature recently?

6.53pm BST

Even in his playing days, Zinedine Zidane seemed unknowable. As a manager, the sense of distance has only grown. He won three Champions Leagues with Real Madrid without ever giving a sense of what his idea of football looked like.

Zidane is one of five coaches to have won the Champions League on three or more occasions, ranking alongside Bob Paisley, Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique and behind only Carlo Ancelotti. He is the only manager to win three successive Champions Leagues and yet few would consider him one of the game’s elite coaches. In that spell he won one La Liga title.

Team news Michael Olise, who came off the bench to score the winner against Belgium on Monday, starts in attack for France. That’s one of six changes made by Zinedine Zidane. Ousmane Dembele, Rayan Cherki, Adrien Truffert, Dayot Upamecano and Adrien Rabiot all come into the side, Dembele as captain in the absence of the injured Kylian Mbappe.

Roberto Mancini makes two changes to the Italy side that won 4-1 in Turkey. Riccardo Calafiori and Moise Kean come in for Matteo Ruggeri and the injured Giacomo Raspadori.

6.15pm BST

Preamble G’day and welcome to live, minute-by-minute coverage of the Nations League match between France and Italy at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.

France’s new coach Zinedine Zidane has made a fine start: two away games. two 1-0 wins against Belgium and Turkey. This is his first home game as France manager, and his first meeting with Italy since 9 July 2006. Don’t play silly buggers; you know exactly what happened that night.

Italy’s Nations League campaign got off to a bad start with a 2-0 defeat at home to Belgium, but they romped to a 4-1 win in Turkey on Tuesday. Roberto Mancini, who is beginning his second spell in charge, has also been in the news for other reasons.

We’re only a third of the way through Nations League Group A1, but right now it feels like a shootout between Belgium and Italy for the second quarter-final place. Points taken off France, if there are any, could make all the difference.

Kick off 7.45pm BST.
