Tuchel: everyone had a good camp Thomas Tuchel talks to ITV. “We played a very good match … very fluid … to put it into context, it’s the fourth match in 11 or 12 days … we dominated … were very focused … created some good opportunities … scored some beautiful goals … the subs were strong … very good performance again … a deserved win … I don’t take [Kane’s goalscoring] for granted, it’s just exceptional … every single match … it’s difficult to find new words … [England’s good form is a result of] training, attitude, cohesion, belief … of course [the World Cup has made England stronger] … we got the first medal in 60 years … we didn’t go out in the group stage … of course it made us stronger … now we have had a strong first camp … all four matches were at the highest level … you learn from every day together … I’m just happy that everyone in camp was contributing … everyone was on the pitch … everyone had a good camp.”

9.58pm BST

Bellingham: an 'honour' to play with Kane Jude Bellingham, who won his 60th cap tonight at the age of 23, pays tribute to 125-up Harry Kane on ITV. “There’s not much more you can say [about Harry Kane] that’s already been said … I can only talk about him from my perspective … he’s first and foremost an unbelievable human being … as a captain … as a man … he looks after each and every single person … he’s the one to always take responsibility when something needs doing off the pitch … then on it you’re running out of superlatives … he’s the best England player that’s ever worn the shirt and it’s an honour to play with him … he’s playing at a level pretty unmatched … scoring goals for fun … and he’s getting back as well!”

9.54pm BST

It’s been a highly successful international break for England. Even the defeat to Spain showed promise. Tonight, just as with Saturday’s rout of Croatia, England were to a man excellent, give or take a couple of trademark moments of skittishness from Jordan Pickford, and would we have him any other way? Jude Bellingham was again imperious, Harry Kane did Harry Kane things, the defence kept a clean sheet, and the second-string wingers put in a fine shift, Morgan Rogers especially. England have a lot of strength in depth, and the manager’s rediscovered his mojo and replenished his stock which had taken a hit after the closing third of the World Cup semi-final. Everyone happy and smiling again. Especially Mr 125. Thoughts and prayers with Peter Shilton tonight.

9.46pm BST

Shall we update that England men’s all-time appearance chart? Hey, it’d be rude not to. The big news obviously Jordan Pickford nudging ahead of his namesake Henderson into 13th spot overall.

125: Peter Shilton, Harry Kane120: Wayne Rooney115: David Beckham114: Steven Gerrard108: Bobby Moore107: Ashley Cole106: Bobby Charlton, Frank Lampard105: Billy Wright96: Kyle Walker94: John Stones92: Jordan Pickford91: Jordan Henderson90: Bryan Robson

9.44pm BST

Mr 125 speaks to ITV. “It was the perfect night for me personally … and also the team … it’s been a tough, long camp … you saw some fantastic football there today … one-touch football … as good as it gets … it’s about taking your opportunities … you’re seeing that from everyone in the squad … [cap 126 in November] would be nice for sure!”

9.42pm BST

It’s full time in Croatia as well, where Spain have come from behind to win 2-1. All of which means Group A3 now looks like this …

1. Spain P4 GD+7 Pts 122. England P4 GD+11 Pts 93. Croatia P4 GD-10 Pts 34. Czechia P4 GD-8 Pts 0

… and that effectively seals a quarter-final spot for England. It’s not officially rubber-stamped yet, but it’s as good as. Spain are certainly through; England can only be pipped by Croatia if they lose both of their final two matches in the November break, at home to Croatia and away to Spain, while Croatia win both of theirs, away to England and at home to Czechia … and because things would go to the head-to-head, they’d have to beat England by a minimum of seven goals at Wembley. I’d plan ahead for the quarter-finals if I were England.

Updated at 9.47pm BST

9.35pm BST

FULL TIME: England 3-0 Czechia England complete their third win in eight days as a productive international break comes to a close.

9.34pm BST

90 min +2: Macek carves a long-range shot wide left. England and Pickford will get their clean sheet.

9.34pm BST

90 min +1: A cross comes into the England box from the right. Alexander-Arnold holds firm at the far post under pressure from Naderi, turning out for a corner. Nothing comes of the set piece.

9.33pm BST

90 min: Mikel Merino has scored his second goal of the evening, to complete the turnaround for Spain. They’re 2-1 up in Croatia, having gone behind early doors to Ivan Perišić’s goal. Perišić has since been sent off for picking up two yellows. Meanwhile at Wembley, there will be two additional minutes.

9.31pm BST

89 min: England pass and probe as their impressive second string search for a cherry to pop atop the cake.

9.29pm BST

87 min: Ngumoha jinks elegantly down the left before flicking a cross in for Calvert-Lewin, who can’t connect, six yards out. What quality England have in depth … and Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon have been given the night off!

9.27pm BST

85 min: Eze picks up possession in the centre again, but his shot from the edge of the D is blocked at source.

9.26pm BST

84 min: Eze slaloms his way down the middle and enters the box, before running into the back of Coufal, who shepherds the ball back to his keeper. Eze goes over, claiming a penalty, which is a bit saucy really, because it’s obviously not. And that’s the end of the evening for Coufal, who makes way for the debutant Kričfaluši.

9.24pm BST

82 min: Harry Kane’s 125th shift for England comes to an end. Having scored twice on this record-equalling night, he’s replaced by Calvert-Lewin. A sixth hat-trick for England, which would equal another record, set by Jimmy Greaves, will have to wait. Again.

9.23pm BST

81 min: The pace has properly dropped now. Everyone hanging around for the final whistle.

9.22pm BST

79 min: Šulc bustles down the left and cuts back for Macek, who from the edge of the D, pearls a vicious drive inches wide of the left-hand post. Pickford probably had it covered, but it would have taken a strong hand to stop it were it on target.

9.20pm BST

77 min: Radosta finds himself with a little bit of time and space on the right. But he can’t make a decision, and is eventually stripped by Garner.

9.18pm BST

75 min: All of those subs have kind of jiggered the rhythm and momentum. Like England will give two hoots about that. So comfortable. Czechia will just want to get out of Dodge without shipping any further damage.

9.17pm BST

73 min: Bellingham and Hall are replaced by Ngumoha and Gibbs-White. Hold on, is that Bellingham off to boos? Nope! Juuuuuuuuuude! Meanwhile young Ngumoha, only recently turned 18, gets a huge hug of encouragement from his manager before stepping across the white line for his third cap and first international appearance at home.

Updated at 9.32pm BST

9.13pm BST

71 min: England hold onto the ball in the game-and-clock-management style. This has been all too easy for the team ranked fourth in the world against number 50.

9.12pm BST

69 min: Sláma and Sadílek are replaced by Macek and Zmrzlý, the latter’s name not vowel-free on account of ý being a long vowel in Czech phonology.

9.09pm BST

67 min: Vitík is booked for some unnecessary shirt-tugging.

9.08pm BST

65 min: Coufal’s poor backpass leads to another England corner. Alexander-Arnold’s delivery nearly finds Bellingham; Quansah hits a pearler that smacks Coufal flush in the face, knocking him backwards after a short delay. Coufal gets back up with an amused look on his face.

9.06pm BST

63 min: Anderson and Guehi are replaced by Garner and Branthwaite. Meanwhile in the other match in A3, Mikel Merino has equalised for Spain in Croatia, where it’s 1-1 after 61 minutes.

9.04pm BST

62 min: Now it’s Hložek’s turn to nearly steal the ball of Pickford’s toe. What a performance.

9.03pm BST

61 min: Alexander-Arnold advances down the inside-right channel and aims a rising shot towards the top right. It’s always heading over from the moment the ball leaves his boot.

9.03pm BST

60 min: One of the biggest cheers of the night as a paper aeroplane flung from the stand makes it onto the pitch. It’s not been much of a contest on the field, so you can kind of understand the emotion.

9.01pm BST

58 min: Czechia respond with another sub, replacing Ambros with Hložek.

9.00pm BST

GOAL! England 3-0 Czechia (Kane 57) Hall hits the corner long from the right. Kane rises highest at the far post, and his downward header squirts into the bottom left. Horníček should save, but doesn’t react quickly enough. Kane’s 91st goal in 125 games!

Harry Kane heads home his second, and England’s third, goal of the game. Photograph: Adam Davy/PA Updated at 9.14pm BST

8.59pm BST

56 min: Rogers crosses low from the right. Bellingham tries to trick the keeper with a back-flick at the near post. Nearly, but not quite. A corner will have to suffice. From which …

8.58pm BST

54 min: Sadílek telescopes a leg and clumsily catches Rogers, picking up a booking that’ll see him miss his next match as well, for the Czechs against Spain. Lewis-Skelly then stupidly gets involved, putting himself right up in Sadílek’s grille. The referee goes easy on him, telling him to pipe down rather than flashing a second yellow. It would have been one of the all-time daft dismissals.

8.56pm BST

53 min: Lewis-Skelly makes good with a sensational Cruyff turn to break into space. He feeds Kane, who aims a rising shot towards the top left. The ball skims off the top of the crossbar.

8.55pm BST

52 min: Lewis-Skelly tugs away at Šulc, who is going nowhere. A no-brainer of a booking, in more ways than one. Thomas Tuchel is furious with his player, who will now miss England’s next match, against Croatia at Wembley.

8.53pm BST

50 min: Hall takes liberties in ushering a ball out of play on the Czech right flank. Coufal, chasing what seemingly looks a lost cause, nicks it off him, flying into space on the touchline … but the flag goes up for an England throw. Not sure about that. That was very close to a big blunder by Hall.

8.50pm BST

48 min: Alexander-Arnold chases a long pass down the right. His instant low cross is deflected behind for a corner … which England don’t get to take, Kane rather harshly penalised for grappling in the box.

8.48pm BST

46 min: Pickford faffs around with the ball at his feet again, and is nearly closed down by Sadílek. You have to wonder sometimes.

8.47pm BST

England get the second half started. Czechia have made one change, sending on Radosta for Lingr, who didn’t.

8.35pm BST

Half-time postbag. “I know for many folks an elongated international break is not terribly popular, but this England squad is certainly benefitting from it. Some of the interpassing has had a much higher level of mutual understanding and the general fluidity of positional swapping has been actually quite thrilling at times. And Bellingham ... phew!” - Dean Kinsella

“And to think that ten years ago, Gary Neville had Kane taking corners” – Andrew Goudie

8.34pm BST

HALF TIME: England 2-0 Czechia … much to frustrated Czech captain Coufal’s chagrin. He tells it as he sees it to the referee, who fires back a few truths of his own. England meanwhile wander off down the tunnel, half the job completed without fuss.

8.32pm BST

45 min +1: Guehi clumsily skittles Lingr out on the left. Sadílek sends the free kick in. Quansah heads behind for a corner there’s no time to take. The whistle goes …

8.31pm BST

45 min: … and Alexander-Arnold swings it in. Long. Anderson and Bellingham take turns to fashion space for a shot; neither manage to do so. There will be one additional first-half minute.

8.29pm BST

44 min: Hall sends the corner long. Kane competes at the far stick, and earns another corner. This one will come in from the left …

8.28pm BST

43 min: Kane bustles down the right and competes for a ball he’s got no right to win. But Sadílek hesitates, Kane closes him down, and the ball pings out for a corner. From which …

8.27pm BST

42 min: That’ll be 90 goals in 125 matches, then. Breaking news: Harry Kane is good. England are good.

8.26pm BST

GOAL! England 2-0 Czechia (Kane 40) Anderson shovels a cute pass down the right for Rogers, who cushions a volley through the six-yard box. Kane, his run perfectly timed, opens his body and slams home. He couldn’t miss! What a way to celebrate cap number 125!

Updated at 8.39pm BST

8.25pm BST

39 min: Eze has a chance to cross from the left but decides to turn tail, irritating the crowd a tad. He lays off to Hall, who doesn’t hesitate and delivers. The ball’s hacked clear. A fair chance we’ll see Gordon in the second half?

8.22pm BST

37 min: The pace drops a bit. As does the atmosphere. All a little bit flat at the moment.

8.21pm BST

35 min: … so having said that, Guehi takes a poor touch on halfway and allows Sadílek to make off with the ball. England are suddenly light at the back, and are fortunate Šulc butchers a cross from the left with red shirts infield. A timely reminder for England that the job’s not done yet.

8.18pm BST

33 min: This match is being almost exclusively played out in Czechia’s half. A second England goal feels merely a matter of time.

8.17pm BST

31 min: It’s not the most original of observations, but … Thomas Tuchel should have taken Trent Alexander-Arnold to the World Cup, shouldn’t he?

Answer: Yes.

8.16pm BST

29 min: Kane drops deep and creams a diagonal pass towards Alexander-Arnold on the right. Alexander-Arnold sends an instant low cross into the centre. Rogers, his back to goal, cushions the ball into the path of Anderson, who lashes a wild shot miles over the bar. Anderson wears the look of a player who knows he should have worked Horníček at the very least. He probably should have scored.

8.13pm BST

GOAL! England 1-0 Czechia (Coufal og 27) Bellingham flicks a pass down the inside-right channel for Kane, who whips a low cross into the box. Coufal thinks Eze is closer than he actually is, and, facing his own goal, extends a leg and diverts the ball past his keeper and into the net. One of the great unforced errors, but hats off to Kane for delivering a ball that put the defender into a blind panic.

Updated at 8.21pm BST

8.12pm BST

26 min: Bellingham finds Rogers again. Rogers hoicks a wild cross out of play on the left. Seconds earlier, Bellingham stretched for Alexander-Arnold’s right-wing cross but couldn’t quite get there. Bellingham is everywhere.

8.10pm BST

24 min: Bellingham wedges a diagonal defence-splitter to Morgan, rushing into the Czechia box from the right. Morgan lifts the ball over Horníček, but it’s neither a shot or an effective cross, and the ball bounces harmlessly wide left and out for a goal kick.

8.09pm BST

23 min: Eze cuts in from the left and rolls a pass to Kane, who has his back to goal on the penalty spot. Kane considers turning and whipping, but his man is touch-tight so he lays off to Morgan instead. Morgan opens his body and attempts to pass into the bottom left. The ambitious effort is blocked.

8.07pm BST

21 min: England were two up by this point in Croatia on Saturday. Speaking of which, Ivan Perišić has put the Croats ahead against Spain.

8.05pm BST

20 min: Ambros crosses low from the right, forcing Guehi to stoop and head out for a throw. Coufal flings it long into the mixer, but England deal with the resulting kerfuffle without drama, and clear easily enough.

8.04pm BST

18 min: Anderson closes down Horníček’s pass out from the back. The keeper’s forced to parry the rebound away from goal. But there’s nobody else in white to take advantage. Czechia go up the other end, Lingr winning their first corner of the evening, from which nothing comes. This match not quite got going yet.

8.02pm BST

16 min: Anderson shovels a pass down the inside-left channel for … the right-back Alexander-Arnold, who bursts into the box and wins a corner. Shades of Total Football.

8.00pm BST

14 min: Rogers strides in from the right. An opportunity to shoot. He takes it … and balloons wildly over the bar. Miles over, and a good distance wide left as well. A decent chance for a player of his goalscoring ability.

7.58pm BST

13 min: Another free kick for England 30 yards out. Kane takes it quickly, wedging down the inside-right channel in the hope of releasing Rogers into the box. Horníček gets to the ball first, palming away bravely before taking a whack from Rogers for his trouble. Both players stay down awhile; both players get up again soon enough. Free kick to Czechia, who clear their lines.

Updated at 8.48pm BST

7.56pm BST

11 min: Anderson intercepts a loose Czech pass and has the opportunity to advance into a big gap down the middle, but lays off to Kane instead, and the momentum is gone. Bellingham tries his darndest to inject some new energy into the move, with a couple of cute pirouettes, but the Czechs have regrouped and there’s no room any more.

7.54pm BST

9 min: Alexander-Arnold and Rogers link up down the right, the former dinking a cross into the middle that’s too high for Kane to divert goalwards.

7.53pm BST

8 min: The England band strike up their parping. “It’s time to bin the awful England band,” opines Andrew Goudie. “Nobody likes them, including the players, I suspect. The team performs much better when the band isn’t there.”

7.53pm BST

7 min: Alexander-Arnold and Bellingham confuse each other, 30 yards out, and Král nips in between them to advance down the left. Král ruffles the side netting with a low drive that Pickford had covered.

7.51pm BST

6 min: … leads to nothing.

7.51pm BST

5 min: Alexander-Arnold whips the free kick over the wall and towards the bottom left. Horníček does exceptionally well to tip it around the post. Was it going wide? Maybe. Perhaps it was hitting the post. The keeper couldn’t take any chance. And then the corner …

Updated at 8.45pm BST

7.50pm BST

4 min: Pickford launches long, and Rogers brings the ball down elegantly. Král comes bumbling in, not so elegantly, and clanks Rogers to the floor. A free kick in a central position, 25 yards out. Alexander-Arnold’s eyes light up. Looks like he fancies this.

7.49pm BST

3 min: Pickford, who had a couple of flaps in Croatia last weekend, dallies with the ball at his feet and is very nearly closed down by Naderi. Say what you will, but Pickford’s never a dull watch, one way or another.

7.47pm BST

2 min: Alexander-Arnold’s first act upon his return is to misplace a pass down the right flank. Rogers not on his wavelength there.

7.46pm BST

Czechia get the ball rolling. The Wembley crowd gently rumbling rather than raving. “I was at Brisbane Road for Peter Shilton’s 1,000th league appearance where he was in goal for Orient against Brighton at the age of 47,” recalls Ian Burch. “Welcomed onto the pitch with balloons, a red carpet and a silver salver, he kept a clean sheet as the O’s won 2-0. Five games later he was shown the door. O’s manager Tommy Taylor said he let Shilts go as his goal kicks were not making the halfway line bless him, something which was required of every keeper in the old Division Three.”

Updated at 8.01pm BST

7.42pm BST

The teams are out! England in white, Czechia in red. We’ll be off in a couple of minutes. “Can’t wait for this,” begins Dave Estherby. “Because of Kane’s cap record? Because I love watching England?? Because I’m a huge fan of the Nations League??? Nope, it’s just one less day to wait for the proper stuff, namely the brouhaha that is going to ensue at Anfield on Sunday.”

Updated at 8.43pm BST

7.41pm BST

Some slapstick shenanigans on ITV as the Wembley water sprinklers turn on Ian Wright, Roy Keane and Mark Pougatch as Wright is mid-soliloquy in praise of Jude Bellingham. It’s not quite up there with your Harry Redknapp and Martin Keown touchline classics, but mildly entertaining nonetheless. Wright doesn’t look particularly amused, and tries to style it out by joking about all his wasted prep for the Bellingham bit, though his light-coloured suit now has moist patches, and one suspects he’s more concerned about the spatter than his patter. Keane remains admirably unperturbed, though you’d still pay cash money to witness any back-and-forth that may occur with the Wembley groundsman later on.

7.31pm BST

There’s a better-than-evens chance of England effectively qualifying for March’s quarter-finals tonight. Should they – as expected – beat Czechia, and should Spain – as expected – see off Croatia, England would find themselves comfortably in second spot on nine points, with the Croats in third on three. That wouldn’t put the Three Lions officially over the line, but Croatia would then only be able to at best tie England on points by the end of the group phase in November; in that scenario, it’d then go to the head-to-head, and the only way Croatia could win that is if they’d beaten England by an eight-goal margin at Wembley. Fair play if all this comes to pass.

7.15pm BST

Harry Kane, 124 caps and counting, speaks to ITV ahead of the next, and fairly important, one. “It’s always special … just seeing Wembley … I never take it for granted … it’s obviously a special night but we have to focus on the job … [my debut] was just as I dreamt it … I am extremely proud to represent England … that was an amazing moment for me, and I’ve been lucky to do it again a fair few times! … we’ve been extremely close [to winning a trophy] on many occasions … we’re closer than we’ve ever been before … we still have to prove it on the bigger stage … we’re in a good place, I’m in a good place, the team is looking really strong and hungry … we keep testing ourselves … hopefully the best is yet to come.”

7.10pm BST

Thomas Tuchel speaks to ITV. “There is never a perfect 90 minutes but it was a very, very good 90 minutes … a very impressive performance on and off the ball … for the whole period of the match … we felt it straight away from the start that we had a good performance … we have improved in the movements when Harry Kane drops … we have Jude Bellingham a bit closer to him … if both drop, Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka were always ready to go through the last line … we have worked on that … to fill the box … we had four or five people in the box … we are getting there … the front four love to play with each other … very dangerous … have full support from behind … I am hoping Morgan Rogers can prove a point today because we are saving some legs … [the longer international break] for patterns is very good … the language sinks in … a different style of play from the clubs … if you have more than two games you can have a training session, show, debrief … let the patterns sink in.”

Tuchel also reminisces about his time playing as a child in the back garden, pretending to be Peter Shilton and/or Ray Clemence. A laugh and a smile with ITV’s Mark Pougatch. He’s as relaxed and carefree as you’d expect for a man who has just seen his team score seven goals away from home.

6.45pm BST

Some more on the Shilton-bothering antics of England’s current captain. (We are of course assuming Kane won’t do himself a mischief in the warm-up. Shilts must be cursing that alternate-appearance arrangement with Ray Clemence during the late 1970s, huh?)

6.39pm BST

The big news – of course – is Harry Kane’s record-equalling appearance for England. He leads the line tonight and by doing so, earns his 125th cap. He joins Peter Shilton at the head of a distinguished list (see below). Shilton took 21 years to clock up that number of caps; Kane has just needed 11, since coming on for Wayne Rooney against Lithuania as a 21-year-old in 2015 and taking just 79 seconds to score his first international goal.

The other bits of team news aren’t insignificant, though. Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made his first start for England in nearly two years last week in Prague, but sat out the weekend rout of Croatia, reclaims his spot at right-back. Jarell Quansah, who took his place in Rijeka, moves to the centre of defence. Meanwhile Myles Lewis-Skelly deputises for the injured Alex Scott, while Eberechi Eze replaces the in-form Anthony Gordon on the left flank. Morgan Rogers also gets a start.

6.27pm BST

Some early team news. It’s piping hot off the press, courtesy of our man at Wembley, Jacob Steinberg …

Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to get another chance at right-back tonight. He impressed in Prague last week. Eberechi Eze is also poised to make his first start of this camp.

6.25pm BST

It’s going to be a big evening for our Admin and Housekeeping department, as a couple of tables will need significantly updating by the end of it. First up there’s Group A3 of the Nations League, which currently stands like this …

1. Spain P3 GD+6 Pts 92. England P3 GD+8 Pts 63. Croatia P3 GD-9 Pts 34. Czechia P3 GD-5 Pts 0

… and there’ll also be the small matter of England men’s all-time appearance chart, the top of which is forecast to be hit by a crossfire Harry Kane. It’s a gas, gas, gas!

125: Peter Shilton124: Harry Kane120: Wayne Rooney115: David Beckham114: Steven Gerrard108: Bobby Moore107: Ashley Cole106: Bobby Charlton, Frank Lampard105: Billy Wright96: Kyle Walker94: John Stones91: Jordan Henderson, Jordan Pickford90: Bryan Robson

6.15pm BST

Preamble Czechia have played 14 matches in the last 12 months. They’ve only won four of them: against San Marino, Gibraltar, Kosovo and Guatemala. They’ve lost their last four straight: against Mexico, Croatia, Spain and … England, who by contrast are coming off the back of a third-placed finish at the World Cup, a decent showing against the new world champions, and an historic win in Croatia. We could go on – England are fourth in the Fifa rankings, the Czechs 50th – but there’s nothing to be gained in belabouring the point … and in any case football doesn’t always work like that, which is why we keep turning up and tuning in. Will England consolidate their position in Group A3 with a view to making next spring’s quarter-finals, or can the Czechs spring a surprise and keep their (admittedly faint) hopes alive? We find out from 7.45pm BST. It’s on!
