Phil Foden has a very broad grin, and an inflatable banana, after a goal and a win:

It wasn’t pretty. They played a really good game, pressed us high, made it really difficult at times. It’s about how you overcome a situation, to come away with three points was the main thing today and we’re all really happy. It was an amazing feeling. I’ve missed a few big chances this season, and I knew it was a matter of time before it came. I’m obviously delighted to score and help the team, but it was just about getting the three points because it puts us in a very good situation in the league.

It hasn’t affected us one bit [the legal shenanigans]. We’ve just stuck together and done what we normally do, focus on the games. We have great characters and leaders in the changing room and nothing has changed.

5.34pm BST

And here’s Andoni Iraola:

A lot of things happened during the game. The first half more or less level, but after they scored, second half we need the comeback. I think we played very well until the 2-1, and then we started to protect something. I think we didn’t manage well the last minutes. Some of the players had quite clear chances to finish the game, we had two or three super clear chances, and we lacked some composure on the ball.

5.32pm BST

Liverpool’s Alexander Isak talks victory at Brentford, and his very smartly-taken goal:

Super, super happy with the win. It’s a tough ground, it’s a tough team to play, especially away from home. We knew it was going to be a fight, and it’s important to come out on top. My goal was more about concentration, because I didn’t have too many chances. I was waiting for my moment and that was the one. I just tried to get control of the ball and finish as quickly as possible, and luckily it went in. When they go a man down obviously they protect their goal a bit more, so there’s not much space to play in. You’ve got to be ready when the chance pops up.

5.29pm BST

And finally, Newcastle’s home game against Aston Villa is about to kick off. Rob Smyth is watching that one, here:

5.28pm BST

Finally, Jacob Steinberg on Liverpool’s victory over nine-man Brentford:

If this truly was the turning point for Liverpool’s spluttering forwards then they will owe a big debt of gratitude to Yehor Yarmolyuk. Brentford were 1-0 up when their midfielder saw red for a headbutt on Jérémy Jacquet just before half-time and, while Andoni Iraola will hope that surviving one of the toughest tests the Premier League has to offer is a sign his methods are starting to take hold, the Spaniard will know it was very different contest once his side had a numerical advantage to exploit.

Brentford, whose unbeaten start to the season is over, raged at the officiating. They finished with nine men after losing Vitaly Janelt late on. John Brooks walked off to boos at full-time, although in truth Keith Andrews’ side only had themselves to blame. They pressed the self-destruct button when they had Liverpool on the ropes.

5.27pm BST

And here’s Will Unwin on Manchester City’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich:

There have been few winners in Manchester City’s guilty verdict, except highly paid lawyers and the inflatable fruit industry. The fans have suffered, being forced to question everything they have been told, while being labelled “cheats”, but they were able to forget the cacophony of noise around the club as Enzo Maresca became the first manager in history to win his first seven games in charge of a team.

Ipswich were the latest victims but they put up a fight in City’s first home Premier League game since being found to have breached financial rules. Defiance has fortified the majority of the City fanbase, who were able to see local boy Phil Foden instigate the triumph with a kiss of the badge, before an emblem of their wealth, Erling Haaland, secured the points to move six clear of the nearest challengers with a clinical double, albeit with a few scares between.

5.25pm BST

Here’s Billy Munday’s report on that Fulham win:

After such a dominant performance against a team so blunt going forward, it almost felt inevitable that Álvaro Arbeloa was going to be denied his first Premier League win as Fulham head coach in similar fashion as the weeks and games before. After all their chances and possession, Craven Cottage should not have been a place of nerves when Mohamed Belloumi lined up a free-kick as three minutes of stoppage time were shown.

When the Hull winger blazed that free-kick over the bar – in truth, the closest Hull had come to scoring throughout the second half – the tension was released that little bit more. Despite Ryan Sessegnon’s late red card, the full-time whistle brought a first victory of the season, courtesy of Alex Iwobi’s first-half strike, and a release from the burden of being the Premier League’s basement club.

5.24pm BST

Alvaro Arbeloa has a post-match chat after Fulham’s first win of the season:

I’m so happy! Happy for my players, for the supporters, for everyone at the club. We deserved this before but today we did a very good game. I can’t believe the game ended only 1-0, but very happy. We were in this situation before, so we were talking this week about the last 10, 15 minutes in the Premier League, we need to control what we can control. We played with personality, with character, with ambition. We controlled the game with the ball. I’m so proud of some of my players because they showed that character.

In League Two the meeting of top-of-the-table Salford and bottom-of-the-table Crawley was not as lopsided as might have been expected but two goals from Macaulay Langstaff saw the favourites win 2-1. Barnet remain hot on their heels after turning a 1-0 half-time deficit into a 2-1 win at Tranmere, both goals from Kabongo Tshimanga. The Bees have two games in hand and still haven’t lost. Neither have Crewe, who were 3-0 up at home to Rochdale with half an hour to play and eventually clung on to win 3-2. Walsall are also unbeaten, with their 1-1 draw at Swindon their seventh stalemate in 10. Unbeaten teams are ten-a-penny in League Two but the only other one in the entire football league is Manchester City.

The league leaders also lost in League One, Plymouth going down 2-0 at home to Huddersfield. So they are overtaken by both Bradford, who won 2-0 at home to Stevenage, and Stockport County, who beat Bromley 1-0. At the bottom Wigan beat Reading 1-0, just their second win of the season, but they remain at the foot of the table. Sheffield Wednesday are the big winners, tonking AFC Wimbledon 5-0.

5.06pm BST

Final score: Brentford 1-2 Liverpool And it’s all over at Brentford, who have lost a game for the first time this season. Two red cards for the home side, two goals for the visitors, three points for Liverpool.

5.04pm BST

Final score: Manchester City 3-2 Ipswich The final whistle blows in Manchester, where City bank three more points.

5.04pm BST

But Liverpool should have ended it! Barcola is played into space on the left, but having fluffed a one-on-one in the first half it seems he just doesn’t believe in himself enough to go for goal. Instead he delays, and passes inside to Koumas, who is crowded out before he can shoot.

5.03pm BST

Still Keith Andrews wants his team to attack! Koumas ends the latest Liverpool counter with a hard, low, but straight-at-the-keeper 20-yarder, and Brentford will keep attacking!

5.02pm BST

Another update from Simon McMahon: “Dundee United get a point at Perth, but will be disappointed not to take all three, after the Tangerines sweet midfield duo of (Dylan) Tait and Lyall (Cameron) dominated proceedings for much of the 90 minutes. Still, a point’s a point, and United remain in the top six.”

5.00pm BST

Red card! Brentford go down to nine men! Ngumoha leads another Liverpool break, but he’s eventually brought down on the edge of the Brentford penalty area by Vitaly Janelt. Janelt has already been booked once for dissent, and that’s the end of his game!

Updated at 5.00pm BST

4.59pm BST

Joe Gomez very slowly takes the ball down the right as the clock ticks to 90 minutes at Brentford. Six minutes’ stoppage time to play there.

4.57pm BST

Liverpool are no longer in control at Brentford, with the home side committing numbers forward in search of an equaliser. Then they get a chance to break, four on two, only for Barcola to linger on the ball and get robbed of it!

4.55pm BST

Final score: Fulham 1-0 Hull City A first win of the season for Fulham! Three precious points lift the Cottagers, temporarily at least, out of the bottom three. Zero shots on target from Hull today.

4.53pm BST

They’re in the sixth of three minutes’ stoppage time at Craven Cottage, with Vaz now limping off. At Manchester City 12 – twelve! – minutes of stoppage time have been indicated. And at Brentford they’re only in the 86th minute, given all the first-half stoppage time played.

4.52pm BST

Red card! Fulham go down to 10 men! Sessegnon has been shown a straight red card for a foul on Robinio Vaz, after catching the Hull player on the heel with a pretty feeble challenge that was made with no hope of or attempt at winning the ball.

4.51pm BST

GOAL! Manchester City 3-2 Ipswich (Flemming, 90 mins) Ipswich are back in the game! Donnarumma dives to his right as Zian Flemming’s shot flies down the middle of his goal, and there’s just one in it as the game goes into stoppage time!

Updated at 4.53pm BST

4.49pm BST

Penalty to Ipswich! The VAR has got involved again, this time to tell the referee to look at Guehi’s challenge on Abdul Fatawu, and the penalty is given!

4.48pm BST

And while that was happening Barcola hit the bar for Liverpool, with a nice (but not nice enough) floating curler.

4.47pm BST

Disallowed! Still Manchester City 3-1 Ipswich! Turns out Fernandez was offside, so VAR intervenes to chalk the goal off and 3-1 it remains.

4.47pm BST

GOAL! Manchester City 4-1 Ipswich (Haaland, 85 mins) Great save! And a wonderful goalline clearance! And a hat-trick for Haaland! Enzo Fernandez has the first chance, Ndiaye has the second, but Haaland isn’t going to miss his!

4.44pm BST

Queen of the South’s comeback has stalled somewhat. Having fought back from 5-0 down to make it, um, 5-1, Brian Graham has scored twice since then, the latest from the spot, to make it 7-1.

4.41pm BST

From nowhere, a chance for Brentford! A low cross from the left to Igor Thiago, inside the six-yard box, but though he gets in front of Van Dijk he doesn’t get anything on it at all, and the ball is cleared!

4.39pm BST

GOAL! Brentford 1-2 Liverpool (Isak, 70 mins) And now Liverpool lead! A cross from the right beyond the pack post, a lovely header down from Barcola to Isak – where most players would have gone for goal, from an unpromising angle – and the striker, in no space at all, manages to take a touch before shooting low across goal and in off a defender!

Updated at 4.41pm BST

4.37pm BST

For the first 15 minutes of the second half, despite being a man up, Liverpool did little to suggest they were capable of penning Brentford back. But the goal has changed all that, and the pressure is now asphyxiating. But Liverpool aren’t actually creating much with it. 20 minutes plus stoppages to play there.

4.34pm BST

Thriller of the day: Kilmarnock were 1-0 up against Motherwell in the second minute, 2-1 down in the 56th, and they’ve just gone 3-2 up! Also in Scotland, Queen of the South have got on the scoresheet and now trail by just the four goals, 1-5 down at home to goal-crazy Ross County.

4.31pm BST

GOAL! Manchester City 3-1 Ipswich (Haaland, 69 mins) An impeccable finish, inevitably, from Haaland surely makes the points safe for City!

Updated at 4.36pm BST

4.30pm BST

GOAL! Brentford 1-1 Liverpool (Munoz, 62 mins) Liverpool have their equaliser! Victor Munoz is played down the right, chops inside Lewis-Potter and strokes a left-footed shot inside the far post!

Team sheets have landed for the evening Premier League game, and here are the big names:

Newcastle: Hornicek, Miley, Thiaw, Botman, Hall, Gonzalez, Joelinton, Willock, Wissa, Barnes, Fernandez-Pardo. Subs: Pope, Schar, Bamba, Osula, Steur, Toure, Murphy, Burn, Dedic.Aston Villa: Suzuki, Cash, Lindelof, Mings, Wan-Bissaka, Kamara, Joao Gomes, Alysson, Buendia, Manzambi, Jackson. Subs: Bizot, Harwood-Bellis, Barkley, McGinn, Torres, Mbaye, Bogarde, Goretzka, Madjo.Referee: Jarred Gillett.

4.29pm BST

“In some regards, Frimpong reminds me of Reece James, and not in a good way,” writes Joe Pearson. “Seems like every time he gets on the pitch, the next shot we see of him is sitting down getting ready to be subbed off for injury. He appears to have a lot of potential, but we never get to see it. Sigh.” Today has been pretty ugly for him, very much putting the pong into Frimpong. Another layoff beckons.

4.20pm BST

Liverpool are being forced into another substitution – and the half-time substitute Frimpong is going off again! His six-minute cameo is over, and Rio Ngumoha is on!

4.16pm BST

Frimpong, with one of his first touches, pushes the ball down the right flank and takes on Sepp van den Berg for pace. It should be easy, against a lumbering 6ft 4in centre-half, but Van den Berg wins the race.

4.13pm BST

Manchester City have also been forced into a change because of a midfield injury: Kovacic has gone off, and Enzo Fernandez is on.

4.12pm BST

Liverpool are making a halftimely change, with Frimpong coming on. Brentford are going to make two. Thanks to all that first-half stoppage time they’re yet to get back going there (while Fulham, who only had a single added minute at the end of the first half, are already 10 minutes into their second half).

Updated at 4.12pm BST

4.09pm BST

Second halves are ongoing and goals already flying in: the league-doubling department has seen Birmingham go 2-0 up at home to QPR (Liam Millar with the goal) and Salford 2-0 up at home to Crawley (Macaulay Langstaff).

4.06pm BST

A brief half-time report from voluntary Scotland correspondent Simon McMahon: “Goals for every team in the Scottish Premier at half time, Simon, apart of course from Dundee United who, despite enjoying the better of the first 45, trail 1-0 at St. Johnstone. Elsewhere it’s Aberdeen 1-1 St. Mirren, Hibs 1-2 Falkirk and Motherwell 1-1kilmarnock. And Ross County have five at the break.”

4.05pm BST

“Hello Simon,” writes Kári Tulinius. Hello to you!. “To my admittedly amateur eyes, Manchester City haven’t been playing very well, with Ipswich clearly the better team. However, City have plenty of players who can create chances out of nothing, and forwards who can score from very little. That’s what shopping with with a bottomless purse buys you.” Not playing very well, perhaps, but certainly doing enough to be deservedly ahead. But as to how they’re doing it, yes that helps.

3.55pm BST

Because of Szoboszlai’s injury they were anyway playing six minutes of stoppage time at Brentford, and with that VAR delay they’re now in the 55th minute of the first half, and still going.

3.54pm BST

Brentford down to 10 men! Yehor Yarmoliuk is sent off! Darren England, the VAR, took an age to pick up on the foul, but got there in the end. There was not a lot to it, and Jacquet certainly made the most of it, but there was definitely aggressive movement there, and I suppose that’s enough.

3.51pm BST

It takes a while for the VAR to get involved, but eventually the referee is asked to go to his screen.

3.51pm BST

Handbags! Jeremy Jacquet goes down inside the Brentford penalty area as a corner comes in, and it looks like there might have been a headbutt there from Yarmoliuk!

3.49pm BST

Half time: Fulham 1-0 Hull City The whistle blows at Craven Cottage, where Fulham have been completely dominant: 79% possession, 10-2 ahead on shots, 25-3 up on touches in the opposition box.

3.45pm BST

GOAL! Brentford 1-0 Liverpool (Lewis-Potter, 44 mins) And now Liverpool are behind! It’s just an excellent cross and an excellent header from Potter, who has ghosted unmarked into the heart of the area from midfield.

Updated at 3.52pm BST

3.44pm BST

It’s Dango Ouattara, who dives at the ball and somehow contrives to backheel it away from Mac Allister! The players then come together, and the Argentinian goes down, and given the speed at which it all happens it’s an understandable decision in the moment. It’s also an easy intervention for VAR and precisely the kind of decision that’s there to deal with.

3.42pm BST

Penalty to Liverpool (but it'll be overturned)! Now the referee does point to the spot! But it’s actually a brilliant bit of defending, and he’ll have to overturn this.

3.40pm BST

At Brentford, Wirtz goes down in the area with a defender’s arm across him, as he tries to spin onto a ball that was probably hit too firmly for him anyway. It’s not nothing, but nor is it enough. Play on.

3.37pm BST

GOAL! Manchester City 2-1 Ipswich (Haaland, 34 mins) The leaders retake the lead! Kovacic crosses from the right, and Haaland runs onto it and sends a low header bouncing into the corner!

Updated at 3.42pm BST

3.36pm BST

Liverpool have indeed taken off Szoboszlai, with Trey Nyoni replacing him.

3.35pm BST

GOAL! Fulham 1-0 Hull City (Iwobi, 33 mins) A precious lead for Fulham! A nice finish from the edge of the area, teed up by Berge, though Hull certainly contributed – they give the ball away inside their own area with a mishit clearance, and then the goalkeeper dives over the shot in a way that looks extremely clumsy.

Updated at 3.42pm BST

3.32pm BST

At Brentford, Barcola is booked for pulling back Kayode. Very little contact there, though, and I’m far from certain it was even a free kick. Worse still for Liverpool, Szoboszlai is on the ground and looking grumpy, and they’re preparing a substitution.

3.26pm BST

Ross County latest: they’re now 4-0 up at Queen of the South, after 25 minutes, and this could get very ugly.

3.24pm BST

GOAL! Manchester City 1-1 Ipswich (Maeda, 21 mins) Ipswich equalise within moments! Maeda holds off the defender, convinces Donnarumma that he’s going to shoot towards the far post and instead passes inside the near!

Updated at 3.28pm BST

3.22pm BST

Meanwhile Liverpool really should be in the lead at Brenford: Barcola runs clean through on goal, and has all sorts of time and space to draw the keeper and choose how to finish, but he shoots the wrong side of the post!

3.22pm BST

GOAL! Manchester City 1-0 Ipswich (Foden, 18 mins) A good first-time finish from Foden, after he was set up by Doku’s square pass, puts the league leaders ahead!

Andy Hunter’s match report from the Hill Dickinson is here, and you can find it below.

Chelsea have returned from the international break with an authority that augurs well for Xabi Alonso. A brace from Pedro Neto condemned Everton to an inaugural defeat of the season as the visitors climbed to fourth on the back of their first Premier League clean sheet since January. A head injury sustained by Emi Martínez, who was carried off on a stretcher after seven minutes of treatment, was the only concern from a mature display in the Merseyside sunshine for Alonso’s team.

There were goalkeeping issues at both ends of the field with Jordan Pickford unconvincing for the second week in succession as David Moyes’ side suffered self-inflicted wounds. But Everton could have no complaints about the merits of Chelsea’s victory given their contrasting performances in the second half.

A pre-match missive from Billy Munday, our actual correspondent at Craven Cottage!

Fulham and Hull have emerged from the cottage at, er, Craven Cottage with the home side and their manager in particular need of a positive result. Fulham are one of three remaining teams in the Premier League without a win and that means Álvaro Arbeloa is under increasing pressure since his appointment in the summer. This fixture is the second of three of Fulham’s triple header against the promoted sides, having surrendered a lead in the dying minutes at Ipswich last Saturday. It’s a full house.

2.54pm BST

Voluntary Scotland correspondent Simon McMahon gets in touch: “Hi Simon,” he writes. Hello! “Game of the day in Scotland is at a beautifully sunny McDiarmid Park in Perth where a resurgent Dundee United, having moved into the top six after winning their last two games, face St Johnstone. The Saints themselves have started well after gaining promotion last season, and sit above United on goal difference, so it should be a cracker. The other 3 o’clock kick offs are Aberdeen v St Mirren, Hibs v Falkirk and Kilmarnock v Motherwell. Rangers go to Dundee tonight in the evening kick off while league leaders/crisis club Celtic welcome Hearts tomorrow.”

It’s all over at the Hill Dickinson, where Chelsea have wrapped up a 2-0 win. It’s Chelsea’s first Premier League clean sheet since they beat Brenford at home by the same scoreline exactly and to the day nine months ago.

Meanwhile Chelsea lead 2-0 at Everton, where they are in the third of 11 – eleven – minutes of stoppage time.

BREAKING NEWS: A professional commentator has just described Watford as “majestic”. Today is a remarkable day already.

The sun is shining at the Etihad Stadium where stalls are eagerly selling inflated bananas at an inflated price. The plastic fruit offers a jovial element amid the crisis swirling around East Manchester. For the fans in attendance, football is the distraction they need, where they can air support for the team and offer their backing to a hierarchy that has brought them unimagined joy in recent times.

There is, however, concern about the predicament they find themselves in, desperately wanting to believe what the executives have told them over the years – but the ruling was damning from the independent commission and at this point the club’s historic name is being dragged through the mud based on a win-at-all-costs model. City are top of the league with a 100% record but the focus will not solely be on results for a very long time until the entire process has concluded, and no one knows when that will be.

Preamble Hello world! Big day today, is it not? Yes, yes it is. Partly because Watford, West Brom, Wrexham, Wigan and Wycombe are all at home, leaving us just just a Walsall away from every-W-team-at-home-at-once full house (if you classify AFC Wimbledon as an A). But also because the 3pm kick-offs include the teams at the top of the Premier League and at the bottom, plus a Liverpool team approaching a semblance of what you might call form visiting a Brentford side that is yet to lose a game all season. Meanwhile in the Championship it’s first against third as Swansea host West Ham, and fourth against fifth as Birmingham host QPR. League One has first (Plymouth) hosting fourth (Huddersfield) while in League Two it’s top (Salford) against bottom (Crawley).
