Bournemouth v Sturm Graz, Benfica v Celtic, and more: Europa League – as it happened

10.25pm BST

And with that, I’m off. Bye! Here’s a bit of Martin O’Neill’s post-match interview, by way of parting gift.

We started quite well, just trying to get into the game, but they got a goal and it’s the last thing you want to do. Then at 2-0 we had a great, great chance to make it 2-1 and within a few minutes they make it 3-0. And we could have capitulated. But the second-half performance was really terrific. We created chance after chance, we should have scored more goals. But the second-half performance gives me the determination … and I think we can still qualify. I know it’s down to six games but we want to qualify, and we can still do it.

10.20pm BST

Here’s John Brewin on Bournemouth’s glorious first home game in Europe:

An impossible dream realised in the Vitality staging European football, and the Europa League is becoming an oasis for Bournemouth. No wins yet in the Premier League but in beating Sturm Graz to follow victory at Real Sociedad should ease the domestic pressures on Marco Rose. A pair of Brazilians secured club history on the gala night, Evanilson’s first-half header followed by Rayan’s close-range drive, a clincher arriving as the Austrian visitors had pushed hard for an equaliser. Álvaro Rodríguez’s injury-time penalty furthered the celebrations.

Flag day at the Vitality. Elvis Presley’s high baritone and Andy Williams’ tenor replacing the usual dance hits on the public address system marked a different type of occasion. Bournemouth have come a long way. “Minus 17 to European dreams” read a banner in the Steve Fletcher stand, marking the journey from the foot of the Football League to a model, continental club.

Callum McGregor talks through Celtic’s night:

Obviously a disappointing result. Playing against a really good side, and first half we didn’t really help ourselves with unforced errors that then lead to the goal. But second half gives us a little bit to hang on to, we scored one and probably could have scored another couple, so a game of two halves. I actually think the team was OK [in the first half] – we had the ball, we tried to show our personality on the ball and tried to get playing, but it was unforced errors that led to the second and third goal and that does give you a mountain to climb. We know at this level if you don’t look after the ball you’re going to get punished.

10.14pm BST

Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook is collared:

I thought the performance was top. It was a special night, you could feel that from before the game. We bounced back from the weekend and it’s something we can be very proud of. Because there’s so many games if we have a bad game, we’ve got a couple of days to get over it and on to the next one. We showed that today. Everyone who played today was fantastic and it was a collective effort and a great win.

10.12pm BST

Adam Smith, Bournemouth captain, has a chat:

It’s been a long time coming. The fans were up for it, the players were up for it, we’re very happy with the performance. The second half we got a little bit tired but the quality we’ve got off the bench is great. It was very disappointing on the weekend. We let ourselves down as players. We had a chat with each other and we got a reaction today. That was an AFC Bournemouth performance right there. The week’s not done, we’ve got a massive one against Sunderland and we need to get another three points.

10.10pm BST

Hearts’ Josh McPake has a chat. Apparently they took their foot off the gas:

It’s a bit of a gutter. Fought for 75 minutes, but we took our foot off the gas. It’s tough, midweek game. They’re a good team, they’ve got a lot of quality. For a 10 minute period we took our foot just slightly off the gas and they punished us. We showed glimpses for a lot of that game, we showed what we can do, but at this level you get punished for taking your foot off the gas, and that’s what happened tonight.

10.04pm BST

The almost-entirely-useless-because-they’ve-only-played-twice Europa League table in full, then. Bad news for Celtic, extraordinary success for teams whose names begin with the letter B:

9.56pm BST

Final scores Final whistles have been blown (except one) and here are the scores:

Sky Bet League One Mansfield 1-1 Oxford Utd

9.54pm BST

9.52pm: More decisively, Randal Muani has turned in a left-wing cross from close range to seal a comeback win for Juventus at Celta Vigo, where the score is now 1-2 and the final whistle has been blown!

9.52pm BST

GOAL! Bournemouth 3-0 Sturm Graz (Álvaro Rodríguez, 90+2 mins) It’s all over bar the final-whistling at Bournemouth, where Álvaro Rodríguez completes the scoring from the spot!

Updated at 10.22pm BST

9.51pm BST

GOAL! Benfica 4-1 Celtic (Pavlidis, 89 mins) One for the road? Evangelos Pavlidis crowns a largely dominant Benfica performance with a late fourth.

Updated at 10.10pm BST

9.49pm BST

GOAL! Hearts 1-1 Nordsjaelland (Rojkjaer, 86 mins) Hearts are, yes, broken in the final minutes! They’ve had twice as many shots on target as the visitors, more than twice as many shots on target, but it is now 1-1, Reus profoundly wrong-footed when Rojkjaer’s shot from 20 yards comes off the head of McCart.

Updated at 9.54pm BST

9.45pm BST

9.44pm: Meanwhile in League One Mansfield have now equalised against Oxford and have five minutes or so to find a winner, their pursuit aided by the fact that Oxford are down to nine men, with Kioso and O’Donkor both getting booked twice.

9.40pm BST

9.39pm: Oooh, that is a nice hit! Mahamadou Nagida equalises for Rennes against OFI with a gorgeous outside-of-the-boot curler that leaves the keeper grasping at thin air!

9.37pm BST

GOAL! Bournemouth 2-0 Sturm Graz (Rayan, 76 mins) Bournemouth double their lead! And this time it’s a goalkeeping error – Khudyakov comes to claim a Bournemouth corner but rather than punch it he tries to catch, fails, and the ball falls to Rocha Rayan, who manages to avoid hitting the now-prone keeper and hits the net with a low shot!

Updated at 9.51pm BST

9.34pm BST

GOAL! Brighton 4-0 Kauno Zalgiris (O'Riley, 67 mins) Another defensive error! Brighton hit the post and Kauno should clear the ball, but instead their defender takes three touches, running along the byline away from his goal, each one giving him a bit less space than he had previously, before giving it away instead. It’s crossed in, and Matt O’Riley heads in smartly!

Updated at 9.43pm BST

9.32pm BST

9.30pm: Brann have equalised against Lincoln Red Imps, and in more ways than one: it’s now 10-10 in players after Lincoln’s Gabri was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, and 1-1 in goals after Niklas Castro sends an excellent free-kick in off the woodwork.

9.28pm BST

9.25pm: I have now seen that Celtic goal, a fine run across his marker by Duran and a foolish decision to come for a cross by Anatoliy Trubin, the Benfica goalkeeper. He’s beaten to it, and Duran’s task at that point couldn’t have been easier.

9.24pm BST

GOAL! Benfica 3-1 Celtic (Camilo Duran, 63 mins) Celtic are on the scoresheet at the Estadio da Luz! And it’s the third goal of the evening to be scored by someone called Duran. This does not count as a hat-trick.

Updated at 9.40pm BST

9.22pm BST

9.19pm: Juventus have equalised at Celta Vigo thanks to some truly puzzling decision-making from Marcos Alonso. The ball is swung in from the left, and it dips quite nastily just as it reaches him, but he decides that rather than head it away from danger he’ll just chest it straight to Woltemade, who simply sweeps it in.

9.18pm BST

GOAL! Brighton 3-0 Kauno Zalgiris (Rutter, 53 mins) A nice pass releases Osman into the left side of the area, and he picks out a pull-back that leaves Rutter with something very close to a tap-in, with the Kauno goalkeeper Svedkauskas completely out of position!

Updated at 9.34pm BST

9.16pm BST

9.14pm: Ararat have conceded a frankly pathetic goal. Goalkeeper passes to defender, who passes to another defender, who miscontrols calamitously, and Ousmane Sow is left with an easy task from the edge of the area.

9.11pm BST

9.09pm: Celtic may not have scored but a former Celtic player has: Mohamed Elyounoussi has given Copenhagen a 1-0 lead over Braga in the Conference League.

9.05pm BST

9.03pm: Play is restarting or, in a few lucky places, has already restarted. Strap yourselves in, it’s going to get hectic.

8.53pm BST

GOAL! Brighton 2-0 Kauno Zalgiris (Hinshelwood, 45+2 mins) Goalless after 40 minutes, Brighton go in at half-time two up after Jack Hinshelwood’s goal survives a VAR check to see if the ball went out of play in the build-up. They’ve had 10 shots so far, three on target; Kauno are yet to have an on-target shot of any kind.

8.48pm: It is approximately half-timeish across Europe, half-time scores incoming.

8.47pm BST

GOAL! Brighton 1-0 Kauno Zalgiris (Rutter, 41 mins) Can’t lie, I’ve no idea what happened here. Look, you try watching 38 games at once.

Updated at 9.04pm BST

8.46pm BST

GOAL! Bournemouth 1-0 Sturm Graz (Evanilson, 43 mins) What a header that is! The ball is crossed in from the right and met by Evanilson, on the near side of the near post, who somehow power-flicks it high, looping over the keeper and in at the far post!

Updated at 8.57pm BST

8.44pm BST

8.43pm: “If Benfica’s Duran Duran tribute act keeps churning out the hits you can Save a Prayer for Celtic’s chances,” essays Peter Oh, whose earlier effort about Reflex saves was perhaps better but got lost in a barrage of goals, so is rewarded for persistence. Talking of which …

8.40pm BST

8.40pm: Sinisalo is in the right place this time, though, to stop Prestianni’s shot.

Updated at 8.40pm BST

8.39pm BST

GOAL! Benfica 3-0 Celtic (Duran, 36 mins) Celtic give the ball away on halfway, two quick passes send Duran running into the area, and he pushes the ball quite wide before benefiting from Viljami Sinisalo’s puzzling positioning and useless star-jump to turn the ball in with a low shot! This is looking pretty grim for Martin O’Neill’s side.

8.37pm BST

GOAL! Hearts 1-0 Nordsjaelland (McEntee, 33 mins) Hearts take the lead! A corner is swung into the area, hilariously miskicked by Mendy, headed goalwards, and then turned in from close range by Oisin McEntee!

Updated at 8.59pm BST

8.34pm BST

6.34pm: Bournemouth hit the post now, and it feels like a goal is very much coming in that one.

8.34pm BST

8.32pm: “Evening Simon,” writes Simon McMahon. “Celtic are always capable of scoring, but I worry about them defensively. Well, I say worry, but I love it really, as do most fans of other Scottish clubs, who for years have seen the self styled ‘Bhoys’ buy their best players for a pittance, win everything domestically, and then blame ‘lack of competition’ for their European failure. The fact that they are still harking back to 1967, undoubtedly a significant achievement at the time, but also nearly 60 years ago, only confirms how far they have fallen.” You can’t really blame Celtic for the fact they find it a bit hard to win major European trophies these days, though, the whole world of football has shifted against them.

8.31pm BST

8.30pm: Bournemouth have the ball in the net after a bit of a post-corner scramble, but the referee harshly disallows it for some kind of push or other (actually, on reviewing, probably a handball).

Updated at 8.35pm BST

8.29pm BST

8.28pm: Celtic bother the woodwork! Hogh hits one post and, from the rebound, Duran hits the other one!

8.26pm BST

GOAL! Benfica 2-0 Celtic (Bah, 23 mins) Nice work down the left from Benfica, who play the ball around long enough for the entire Celtic defence to fall entirely asleep, whereupon the chip it into the box and onto the right foot of Alexander Bah, whose run has gone unnoticed by the snoozing Celtic backline, and he volleys it in!

Updated at 8.51pm BST

8.22pm BST

8.21pm: And it’s Celta Vigo 1-0 Juventus, Hugo Alvarez eventually poking in after the ball was played from the right-hand side of the penalty area to the left.

8.21pm BST

8.20pm: And now they’re flying in! Atalanta double their lead through a penalty, Freiburg go a goal up against Jablonec through Vincenzo Grifo’s excellent free-kick, and Sint-Truiden actually do go 1-0 up against Iberia, their previous opening goal having been ruled out for offside.

8.19pm BST

8.18pm: Jagiellonia equalise! Kamil Jozwiak reaches the loose ball first to turn in the rebound after his shot is saved.

8.18pm BST

8.15pm: More goals to report, as Sint-Truiden go 1-0 up against Iberia 1999 while Ararat take the lead at Jagiellonia Bialistyock, who are undone by a goal down the middle and Zidane Banjaqui pokes it through the advancing goalkeeper’s legs just before the two of them collide.

8.15pm BST

8.12pm: OFI take the lead against Rennes, who play themselves into trouble as they’re pressed hard. OFI nick the ball, cross it into the box and Taxiarchis Fountas is entirely unmarked as he heads it back across the keeper and in.

8.12pm BST

8.10pm: Duran heads wide as Benfica go in search of a second.

8.09pm BST

GOAL! Benfica 1-0 Celtic (Duran, 5 mins) And Duran makes no mistake from the spot, lifting a cheeky Panenka over Sinisalo! Pretty harsh that penalty call, I fear.

Updated at 8.42pm BST

8.07pm BST

Penalty to Benfica! 8.04pm: A ghastly start for Celtic, who have conceded a penalty with not even four minutes on the clock after Jhon Duran hits the deckbbc. And meanwhile Atalanta have taken the lead against Pafos in the Conference League, Eljif Elmas capping a nice move by sweeping the ball home from the edge of the area.

Pre-match reading: Here’s Jeff Rueter on Feyenoord’s Gjivai Zechiël, who is apparently quite good.

Nailing the pronunciation of Gjivai Zechiël may be a challenge for some, but it’ll be worth the effort. The Dutch G is a guttural one, not struck with a tongue so much as residing under one’s uvula like a congested H: kHEE-vye. The surname is a bit more straightforward: ZEH-kee-el, a natural decrescendo of emphasis with every syllable.

Used in a sentence: Gjivai Zechiël is one of the hottest midfielders in Europe, enjoying arguably the most rapid emergence of any high-level player in 2026.

Martin O’Neill has a chat:

The manager [Marco Silva] came here because he wanted to win things, and you’ve got a good chance when you’re at Benfica. We have to earn the right to play, do lots of things off the ball, but most importantly when you’re on it, have the confidence. We’ll have the opportunity to play, and that’s exactly what you want: confidence in yourself, and confidence in your teammates.

7.25pm BST

More team news, this time from Bournemouth. If the name of the referee rings a bell, it may be because he was the VAR who angered the whole of Egypt at this summer’s World Cup and prompted Marca to run through his “long history of controversies” (actually not long):

Teams! Team news is starting to land and I’m going to pour it all in here, starting with Benfica v Celtic and news that not only is Camilo Durán but Jhon Durán starts for Benfica, making this very much a Durán v Durán affair, and if that isn’t an excuse for enjoying some fine 80s music I don’t know what is.

Preamble Hello world! We have 10 late Europa League games to get our teeth into tonight, plus eight in the Conference League and a token effort from Mansfield and Oxford in League One, any of which we might get distracted by if they look exciting enough. Bournemouth’s Marco Rose is hoping his team recover from the “real slap” they suffered at the hands of Chelsea at the weekend against Sturm Graz, while Celtic’s fans wait to find out if Camilo Duran’s child has been born in time for the Colombian to make it to Lisbon to play Benfica. Elsewhere, two classic names of European club football face each other as Anderlecht, former Uefa Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup winners, head to Dinamo Zagreb, former Fairs Cup winners and Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finalists, for what surprisingly is only a fifth meeting, while Celta Vigo and Juventus play for the third time, with both previous encounters having ended in home wins.
