Xabi Alonso speaks to Sky. “Disappointed … disappointed at the end with the second half, with the result … this is not enough to compete in the Premier League … not to be able to hold for the 90 minutes … that’s why today we were punished … we are not consistent enough to compete during the whole game … 45 is not enough … each detail is important … each action can be decisive … we lost a little bit of control … it’s about mentality … tactical themes … we can do much better … we need to assess, analyse and improve for the future … it is not about looking for excuses.”

A very downcast Levi Colwill talks to Sky Sports. “It was tough … conceding a set piece wasn’t the best … we tried to push and over-exposed ourselves … played some passes we shouldn’t have and forced it … they hit us on the counter which they’re so good at … the third goal hit home and hurt … we’ve got a lot to work on during the international break … at times we’ve been bullied in the box … we trust in our set-piece coach … I don’t think our spirits dropped in any way … we can’t rely on our front three to put us out of danger … the defence and midfield … we have definitely got a lot of room to improve.”

Keith Andrews speaks to Sky Sports. “There’s a lot made about us and set pieces … you can see the different way we scored goals tonight … [Chelsea] were very respectful in the way they set up against us … we had to earn the right to play … very disciplined … we did that brilliantly … [Fabio Carvalho] is such a special soul … I’m so happy for him … he’s worked so hard to come back [from an ACL injury] … it’s important you enjoy these nights … there’s no point in hiding it … I have this unbelievable calm around our team, because I trust them … we try to push boundaries … continue on our journey … [third place] is a lovely place to be … it’s a nice place to be when going home to see my mum and dad tomorrow!”

Brentford played very well in the second half. Chelsea pushed forward for a few minutes after allowing Jaidon Anthony to score his first goal for his new club. But when Igor Thiago finished off a quick counterattack, the game was decided. That chance came after Kristoffer Ajer intercepted a loose pass from Jordan Henderson. Fábio Carvalho added a final goal, and Brentford moved up to third place, at least for the next 19 hours. Chelsea have now let in 12 goals in five Premier League games, the most of any team in the league. They have lost twice and drawn once in their last three matches. Chelsea and manager Xabi Alonso are not yet in a full crisis, but they are close to one. With the international break coming up, they must wait three weeks before they can try to change the mood.

The Gtech Community Stadium en fête. Hey Jude blasting over the PA, the na-na-na coda sparking its most joyous party since the Beatles appeared on the David Frost show back in the day. Keith Andrews conducting all four stands. Then a beautiful moment as Thiago gifts his shirt to a young lad in the crowd; the wee chap looks on the verge of spilling the happiest tears, like it means the whole world, as he points to the heavens. Whatever the context there, it’s such a sweet scene. Let it out and let it in!

GOAL! Brentford 3-0 Chelsea (Carvalho 90+4) Schade throws long from the left. Chelsea half-clear, but the ball’s recycled to Schade, who is inexplicably left in acres on his flank. Schade curls low into the middle. Colwill gets a nick, but only manages to deflect the ball towards Carvalho at the far post. From a couple of yards, the sub roofs it. He’s developing a habit of scoring late goals against Chelsea!

GOAL! Brentford 2-0 Chelsea (Thiago 83) Chelsea throw a lot of men forward. But Henderson’s loose pass is intercepted by Ajer, and suddenly Brentford are on a dangerous counter. Schade is sent clear down the inside-left channel. He tries a sidefoot towards the bottom right. Martinez gets a strong hand to the shot, but the ball rears up for Thiago, who sidefoots into the right-hand side of the net for his first league goal of the season!
